About the show
I have always been intrigued by the various symbolism of the apple, whether it is the forbidden apple that Eve took or the poisoned apple that Snow White ate. There is something extremely fascinating about the apple that always lures me in.
Mad Apple by Cirque du Soleil tells a tale about the ever-vibrant New York – the Big Apple of America. The show delivers the nature of New York – never sleeps, hectic nightlife, and tons of inside jokes.
One thing is for sure: Mad Apple is not your typical Cirque du Soleil show. It doesn’t feature acrobatics and twinkle costumes like other shows. So the question is, what does it have?
To replicate the exact essence of New York, the show—besides the obvious Cirque signatures such as acrobatics, bold dance moves, and dazzling visual lights—is conducted with live music and a lot of dark humor like a true New Yorker.
Personally, I would like to think of Mad Apple as a perfect mixtape of a late-night show, stand-up comedy, live music performance, and circus act. It is an odd mixture, but it works beautifully, to my surprise.
Mad Apple is a safe choice for your first Cirque du Soleil show. It won’t be overwhelming for any first-timer to process and enjoy the show.
What we like
True New York vibe. Everything about the show is so fun and energetic. NYC-themed songs combined with a bit of swearing (?) are so New Yorker to me. And the audiences… oh my… they LOVE it!
Interactive experience. Unlike the usual Cirque du Soleil shows, Mad Apple has interactive performances where the performers engage with the audience. This is not a one-sided show anymore, guys! Adult-only show. Admit it: sometimes, you gotta let your hair down, leave the kids at home, and enjoy your time like a true grown-up.
What we don’t like
A big NO for traditional Cirque show lovers. I saw tons of people in the audience leave just 30 minutes in and most of them were complaining about how Mad Apple is not a Cirque show; about how it lacks intense acrobatics like it is supposed to have. So if you are a big fan of other Cirque du Soleil shows, you might want to think twice before watching this show.
Strong language. Don’t be caught off guard when the performers start dropping the ‘f’ bombs in every sentence. Some might find this amusing and fun. Some might think it is rude, and they don’t pay to hear such things inside a theater.
